Home Cinema Rooms
Home Cinema
At Soundproof Studios we understand that people are passionate; both about their films, and the technology that allows them to enjoy the very best picture and sound quality. More and more people are dedicating whole rooms to their passion for movies and spending a lot of money on equipment and furnishings. However, one area often overlooked in home cinemas is the acoustics of the room itself. Big screen cinemas put a great deal of thought into the acoustics of their auditoria –home cinemas should be no different – you’ve spent the money on the kit, make sure you get the most out of it.
The Acoustic Problems
There are three main problem areas that crop up time and time again with both home and professional cinemas: The sound insulation of the room in question (Building Acoustics), the quality of sound (Room Acoustics) within the cinema itself, and the isolation of any noisy equipment from the walls and ceiling (Acoustic Isolation).
Sound Insulation – Building Acoustics:
We set our home cinemas up to recreate the big screen cinema experience, and this means a lot of additional sound. The audio technology currently available for the home has far outstripped the acoustic capacity of internal and separating walls, floors and ceilings and this can cause noise problems for the people in the cinema itself and any adjoining rooms or properties. We also tend to ‘flush fit’ our speakers, sockets and switches into the plasterboard walls and ceilings –although this looks great, acoustically, all you have done is punch holes in already inadequate insulation.
If we want to enjoy our movies without compromising the performance of our audio set up, the aesthetics of our room or disturbing the neighbours, we need to ensure that all separating walls, floors and ceilings are treated with products that exceed the acoustic performance of standard plasterboard.
We have a high performance acoustic building board, Maxiboard, which is designed to be used on walls and ceilings in place of plasterboard to ensure maximum sound protection. For the floors we can supply a number of acoustic treatments such as Acoustilay and Maxideck products – simply installed directly onto the existing floor.
We also need to make sure we don’t undo the good work by punching holes in the insulation to install our speakers, lights and switches. Treat them with our acoustic light and speaker hoods and backboxes. Standard and bespoke sizes are available.

Sound absorption – Room Acoustics:
The second most common problem is the acoustic balance within the cinema itself. The room needs to be tuned to a level that ensures excessive echo or reverberation does not spoil the quality of sound produced. The reflective surfaces we all like to have, such as bare plasterboard walls and ceilings and timber or ceramic flooring, create a poor environment for quality audio.
This is easily solved by some strategically located acoustic absorbers. Manufactured in different sizes and colours. Sonata absorbers can be installed on both walls and ceilings to give your room the perfect acoustic balance. Beautifully designed, they will add to the aesthetics of the cinema and provide a very professional set up.
Sound Absorption Products for Home Cinemas:
Hard, rigidly abutted materials, transmit sound very efficiently, which is bad news if you have sat your speakers directly onto a shelf or support stand. At Soundproof Studios we supply a range of Isolayte Mats to provide acoustic isolation beneath speakers and other noisy audio equipment such as amplifiers.
